BIS Certification in India

CRS registration, ISI mark licence and FMCS for foreign manufacturers — assistance from applicability check and lab testing to grant of certification.

What is BIS certification?

Proof that your product meets the Indian Standard

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is India’s national standards body under the BIS Act, 2016. BIS certification confirms that a product conforms to the relevant Indian Standard (IS).

For many products it is mandatory — notified electronics under the Compulsory Registration Scheme, and products covered by Quality Control Orders. Such products cannot be manufactured, imported, sold or supplied without valid BIS certification. For others it is voluntary, but still a strong signal of quality in tenders and with buyers.

Who needs it?

Indian manufacturersMaking a product under CRS or a Quality Control Order.
Foreign manufacturersExporting notified products to India, via an Authorised Indian Representative.
Importers & brand ownersSelling notified products under their own brand in India.
Tender suppliersWhere the tender asks for BIS-certified products.
Types of BIS certification

Three schemes most businesses deal with

CRS

Compulsory Registration Scheme

For notified electronics & IT goods. Testing at a BIS-recognised lab, then registration — no factory inspection in the usual case. Products carry the Standard Mark with R-number.

ISI

Product Certification (Scheme-I)

The ISI mark licence for Indian manufacturers. Involves factory inspection, sample testing and ongoing surveillance by BIS.

FMCS

Foreign Manufacturers Certification

ISI licence for overseas factories, with inspection of the foreign unit and an Authorised Indian Representative in India.
